X/Y Microphone Placement@Stereo microphone recording technique. Two cardiod microphones are placed facing each other, usually at an angle of 90¾, with the center of the sound source at the apex of this angle. Some stereo microphones incorporate this placement internally between their two capsules.@XLR, Cannon Connector@A type of audio connector; most familiar as the 3-pin "microphone" plug. On a 3-pin XLR plug wired used for balanced lines, pin 2 should be "hot" (+), pin 3 "neutral" (-), and pin 1 "ground" (shield). In certain applications (particularly some video production environments), pin 2 may NOT be hot; even though this standard was generally agreed to in about 1994. Other variants include 5- and 7-pin XLR connectors, used for some headphones, stereo mikes and intercom systems. Originally manufactured by the Cannon Company, now available from numerous sources.
